Kantha embroidery is a very popular embroidery work of West Bengal and Bangladesh. Kantha stitch is generally done on cotton and silk fabrics. The use of Kantha embroidery is particularly appreciated in saris traditionally worn by women in Bengal. Kantha embroidery is running stitches used for making floral motifs, images of birds, animals and geometrical patterns. Different patterns like fishes, birds, paisley, mandala, mythological stories are also seen in Kantha stitch works.
Kantha stitches are worked upon colourful pieces of fabric and used as wall hangings, tablecloth and cushion covers.
